Abstract
This research focuses on the experiences of Generation X journalists in navigating the
media transformation from print to online platforms. This generation occupies a unique
position, as they were raised and built their careers within the traditions of conventional
journalism, yet must now adapt to the demands of digitalization, which has altered work
patterns, professional ethics, and the dynamics of information dissemination. Employing a
qualitative method with an interpretive phenomenological approach, this study explores the
personal and professional narratives of Gen X journalists who have undergone this transition.
It investigates how they interpret their shifting roles, cope with the pressures of news
production speed, and maintain credibility amidst information overload and the phenomenon
of clickbait.
The findings reveal that Generation X journalists are able to develop adaptive strategies
by integrating classical journalistic values—such as verification, accuracy, and
independence—with contemporary demands that emphasize interactivity, speed, and audience
engagement. These findings affirm that the experience of generation X journalists working in
online media is not merely a process of technical adaptation, but also a profound reflection on
professional identity in the digital era. Consequently, this research does not simply reiterate
existing findings on technological adaptation; rather, it delves deeply into the essence of the
professional experiences of Generation X journalists amidst the disruption of digital media.
This study offers a significant contribution to communication, media, and journalism studies,
as its novelty lies in the theoretical, methodological, substantive, conceptual, contextual, and
empirical integration—an approach that has not been undertaken in previous studies on
Generation X journalists in Indonesia.
