Abstract

Palm oil is currently the largest source of vegetable oil in the world. The increasing demand for palm oil will increase palm oil production which has an impact on increasing the amount of waste generated. One of the wastes from the rest of palm oil production is Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME). POME waste contains organic compounds so that the COD, BOD and TSS values are high. POME or palm oil mill effluent is currently still a waste problem that has not been utilized optimally. POME waste has the potential for renewable energy in the form of biogas. The addition of cow dung needs to be done to increase biogas production because methanogenic bacteria found in cow dung help to maximize the anaerobic fermentation process and methane production. This research was conducted to determine the potential for biogas production from a mixture of POME and cow dung for 25 days by conducting a study of the biogas production process. The method used in the process of making biogas from a mixture of POME and cow dung is anaerobic with a fixed dome type biodigester. Comparison of mixing concentrations of 50% POME and 50% cow dung solution with different loading rates, with variations in administration of 1L/day, 2L/day, 3L/day and 4L/day. Parameters observed were temperatur, pH, COD, biogas production, and environmental impact analysis. The results of this study showed that the COD content increased with increasing loading rate of 11,198 mg/L - 26,327 mg/L with an average temperatur in the biodigester of 25°-30°C and an average pH of 6.2-7. The biogas pressure in the biodigester increases with the addition of the loading rate, which is 101.102 N/m²/day to 101.107 N/m²/day with a daily biogas production of 0.24247 liters/day with a total accumulation of biogas production for 25 days of 6.1 liters.
