Abstract
Indonesia merupakan produsen kelapa sawit terbesar di dunia dengan luas perkebunan mencapai 16,38 juta hektar pada 2023, yang menghasilkan limbah pelepah sawit dalam jumlah besar yang diperkirakan 10 juta ton pelepah kering per tahun hanya di Sumatera Utara. Limbah ini sering kali kurang dimanfaatkan secara optimal, hanya dibakar atau dibuang, sehingga menimbulkan polusi lingkungan dan potensi ekonomi yang terbuang. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan eksperimental, mengolah pelepah kering melalui proses pencacahan/penggilingan, pencampuran perekat tapioka (0-10%), dan pencetakan pelet. Analisis utama mencakup proksimat (kadar air, zat terbang, karbon tetap, abu), komposisi ultimat, nilai kalor, titik lebur abu, dan oksida mineral, dibandingkan dengan standar SNI 8021:2014 dan SNI 8951:2020. Hasil menunjukkan chip memiliki rendemen 90-95% dengan karbon tetap 18,2% namun kadar air tinggi (12,1%) dan abu (2,5%), cocok untuk penggunaan industri dasar. Pelet unggul dengan densitas 1,2-1,3 g/cm³, abu 1,3%, nilai kalor 16,5 MJ/kg, dan daya tahan optimal, melebihi chip untuk pembakaran efisien dan transportasi. Evaluasi ekonomi pada kapasitas produksi 0,3 ton/jam menunjukkan bahwa produksi chip biomassa memiliki kelayakan ekonomi yang lebih baik dibandingkan pelet pada skenario dasar. Produksi chip menghasilkan NPV positif sebesar Rp872.510.320 dengan indikator kelayakan yang memenuhi kriteria investasi. Sebaliknya, produksi pelet pada kondisi dasar belum layak secara ekonomi. Kelayakan pelet dapat ditingkatkan melalui penambahan crude gliserol sebagai bahan aditif sehingga menghasilkan NPV positif sebesar Rp269,3 juta dan IRR sekitar 13%, sedikit di atas tingkat diskonto yang digunakan. Penelitian ini mengisi celah kajian lokal pemanfaatan pelepah sawit, mendukung transisi bioenergi dan ekonomi sirkular di wilayah sawit Indonesia.

Indonesia is the world's largest palm oil producer, with plantation areas reaching 16.38 million hectares in 2023, generating substantial oil palm frond waste estimated at 10 million tons of dry fronds annually in North Sumatra alone. This waste is often underutilized, merely burned or discarded, leading to environmental pollution and squandered economic potential. The research employs an experimental approach, processing dried fronds through chipping/grinding, mixing with tapioca binder (0-10%), and Pelletizing. Key analyses include proximate composition (moisture content, volatiles, fixed carbon, ash), ultimate analysis, calorific value, ash melting point, and mineral oxides, benchmarked against SNI 8021:2014 and SNI 8951:2020 standards. Results show chips achieve 90-95% yield with 18.2% fixed carbon but higher moisture (12.1%) and ash (2.5%), suitable for basic industrial applications. Pellets outperform with 1.2-1.3 g/cm³ density, 1.3% ash, 16.5 MJ/kg calorific value, and optimal durability, surpassing chips for efficient combustion and transportation. An economic evaluation at a production capacity of 0.3 tons/hour indicates that biomass chip production is more economically viable than pellet production under the base-case scenario. Chip production yields a positive NPV of Rp872,510,320, with viability indicators meeting investment criteria. In contrast, pellet production under the baseline conditions is not yet economically viable. The viability of pellets can be improved by adding crude glycerol as an additive, resulting in a positive NPV of Rp269.3 million and an IRR of approximately 13%, slightly above the discount rate used. This study fills local research gaps on palm frond utilization, supporting Indonesia's bioenergy transition and circular economy in palm oil regions.
