Abstract

The writer discusses the representation of love in Christopher Marlowe’s “The
Passionate Shepherd to His Love” Poem. This study aims to examine the type of
love predominantly represented in Christopher Marlowe’s The Passionate Shepherd
to His Love based on Erich Fromm’s theory of love and the dominant type of love
portrayed through the poem’s symbols, imagery, and the shepherd’s actions using
an archetypal, psychological, intertextual approach to identify the extrinsic
elements. The methods employed the library research and qualitative analysis to
identify the intrinsic elements of the poem, discuss various literary devices used in
writing, including figures of speech like imagery, alliteration, and rhyme, theme,
metaphor, and symbolism. The writer concludes that the shepherd’s love for his
love is a form of spiritual devotion, not just romantic affection. The shepherd adores
his beloved as a symbol of nature and divine creation, reflecting the figure of FloraVenus in Greek mythology. Through intrinsic and extrinsic analysis of the poem,
this study can help the readers learn and understand how Marlowe uncovers the
poem using mythological elements.
