Abstract

This thesis explores the self-actualization of Elodie, the main character of
Damsel (2023) written by Evelyn Skye, through the lens of Abraham Maslow’s
hierarchy of needs and B-values theory. Employing a psychoanalysis approach
and library research method, the thesis analyzes intrinsic elements, namely
character, characterization, settings, and conflict to understand Elodie’s
development. In terms of the hierarchy of needs, the analysis focuses on how
Elodie fulfills her needs throughout her journey. Meanwhile, the concept of Bvalues is used to examine the traits she exhibits after achieving self-actualization.
The findings reveal that Elodie successfully achieves self-actualization by
fulfilling her lower-level needs. As a result, she demonstrates seven B-values:
truth, goodness, beauty, dichotomy-transcendence, uniqueness, justice, and selfsufficiency. Although she does not embody all B-values which may sometimes
lead to a less complete or fully realized form of development, she nevertheless
fulfills the essential criteria of a self-actualized individual by grounding her
growth in these higher values.
