Abstract
This study examines how communication in Lee Isaac Chung's Minari (2020) reflects parenting practices within an immigrant family. Drawing on Edward T. Hall’s (1976) theory of high-context and low-context cultures, this study analyzes selected scenes and dialogue involving Jacob and Monica Yi to explore how each parent communicates across three situations, namely transmission of values, control and authority, as well as parental conflict. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach by examining selected scenes, dialogues, and character interactions in the film. The findings show that both parents do not rely on a single communication style, but shift between high and low context communication depending on the situation. The analysis focuses on aspects such as directness, complexity of meaning in their interactions, and relational contexts. Jacob’s communication is influenced by his pursuit of American Dream and concern of economic stability, while Monica’s communication reflects her effort to maintain family unity. These differences lead to two distinct parenting orientations, which are oriented on achievement and oriented on relational interdependence. The study concludes that communication in an immigrant family within the movie Minari (2020) is better understood as situational practice, which is shaped by cultural values, parental roles, and immigrant experiences such as financial struggle, the pursuit of a better future, adaptation challenges, and the need for support from familiar environment.
