Abstract
This research thesis examines trauma in Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, focusing on how Jane’s early life experiences shape her personality, actions, and relationships. Using a structuralist approach as the theoretical framework. The research applies qualitative method to examine how binary oppositions organize the transformation of Jane character. Through close reading and structural analysis, the study identifies oppositional patterns such as oppression versus freedom, passion versus reason, dependence versus independence, and isolation versus belonging. These oppositions function as relational systems that generate meaning and guide the progression of the narrative. The findings show that Jane’s development is structured through systematic contrasts, revealing that meaning in the novel emerges from internal differences rather than psychological interpretation.
