Abstract
The hospitality internship program to Japan is an opportunity for students to gain experience. However, the lack of mastery of Japanese for hospitality and the rapid Japanese pronunciation by native-speaking staff is quite an issue for the students. In addition, the lack of Japanese language resources and books for hospitality, especially ryokan, makes it difficult for students. Therefore, this project aims to create a Japanese language guidebook for ryokans to assist internship students when carrying out internships. This project uses the research and development (R&D) method by Borg & Gall. The making process begins with research and data collection which is used to design and make the preliminary form of product. After that, the book was tested to assess the feasibility, suitability and effectiveness of using the book. The first test was conducted to validate the design and language of the product by experts in the field. The result of this project is a book with the title “Japanese Book for Ryokan” which contains the introduction, duties and responsibilities of hotel departments as well as word lists and conversation examples in the housekeeping, public bath, banquet, and restaurant departments. Based on the validation
test, the resulting product was declared suitable for use by experts in the aspects of design, language, and content. The effectiveness of the book was assessed from a field trial conducted on 30 respondents. Overall, the book was rated as suitable and effective for use with a score of 2.90.
