Abstract

ABSTRACT

Maharani, Rahma Amorita, 2025. “Representation of an Ecological City and
Branding of Kitakyushu as a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Pilot Model
City”. Thesis, Japanese Language and Culture Department, Faculty of Humanities,
Diponegoro University, Semarang. Advisor: Nisia Nur Dwi Agusta, S.Hum., M.Si.
This research aims to explain the representation of an ecological city and
branding of Kitakyushu as an SDGs Pilot Model City. The research method used is
a qualitative method, which involves analyzing data and utilizing existing theories
as an explanatory framework. This study is a literature study that collects secondary
data from books, pamphlets, websites, journal articles, magazines, images, and
documents officially published by the Kitakyushu government. The theories applied
in this study are branding theory and representation theory.
Based on data analysis, it shows that the Kitakyushu government, by
implementing the three pillars of sustainability (economic, social, and
environmental), has unconsciously led Kitakyushu to become an SDGs Pilot Model
City. Kitakyushu actively engages citizens, organizations, communities, activists,
artists, and the private sector to demonstrate its commitment to promoting the SDGs
at the international level. The city's initiatives also serve as a representation and a
branding strategy to reinforce its image as an eco-friendly city, inspiring other
cities worldwide.
