Abstract

This research explores the importance of song translation in the context of global
media, focusing on the Indonesian translations of nine popular Disney songs. Given the
widespread reach of Disney+ Hotstar, which had 2.5 million Indonesian subscribers in
2021, translating song lyrics plays a significant role in bridging linguistic and cultural gaps.
The objective of this study is to identify and analyze the translation strategies applied to
the official Indonesian lyrics of these songs. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and
the documentation method, the study examines the original English lyrics alongside their
Indonesian counterparts for nine Disney songs: "Beauty and the Beast," "A Whole New
World," "You’ll Be in My Heart," "Colors of the Wind," "Circle of Life," "Let It Go,"
"You’ve Got a Friend in Me," "How Far I’ll Go," and "Under the Sea." Findings show that
paraphrasing was the most dominant strategy, used in 165 instances, followed by adaptation
and substitution (59 instances each), omission (25 instances), and addition (2 instances).
The findings suggest that paraphrasing was prioritized to maintain meaning and musicality
in Indonesian. The conclusion of the study is that song translation requires a balance of
semantic accuracy, musicality, and cultural adaptation. The study recommends future
research to explore the role of cultural adaptation in multilingual Disney song translations
and expand to other regional contexts.
