Abstract
This undergraduate thesis examines the significant role of art exhibitions in
diplomatic efforts, particularly focusing on ARTJOG, an annual contemporary art
exhibition held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. While Indonesia traditionally utilizes
arts and culture for its soft power diplomacy, the contributions of
non-governmental organizations in this field remain largely understudied. This
research addresses this gap by exploring how ARTJOG, a local event with an
international reach, facilitates arts and cultural diplomacy and complements
Indonesia's existing diplomatic agenda. The general objective of this study is to
explain the links between art and international relations within the sphere of
diplomacy, with a specific focus on how ARTJOG contributes to and facilitates
arts and cultural diplomacy. This qualitative research employs descriptive
methods, utilizing primary data gathered through in-depth interviews with Heri
Pemad, the co-owner and director of ARTJOG, observations during the ARTJOG
2024 exhibition, and official documents from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign
Affairs. The thesis argues that ARTJOG effectively facilitates arts and cultural
diplomacy by curating exhibitions that showcase Indonesian culture, address
contemporary socio-political issues, and foster people-to-people connections
through various artistic expressions. It serves as a vital platform for cultural
exchange, thereby contributing to Indonesia's soft power diplomacy efforts.
