Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) was a chronic disease that could affect people of all ages over the years. DM patients experienced various complications, thus requiring support from family caregivers to control their blood sugar levels. The routine support, if performed repeatedly every day, could impose a burden on the family caregivers. Spirituality could serve as a coping mechanism to reduce the experienced burden. This study aimed to analyze the spiritual needs of family caregivers of DM patients. This study was a non-experimental quantitative study with a descriptive survey approach. The instruments used were Questionnaire A for demographic data and Questionnaire B for the Spiritual Needs Questionnaire (SpNQ), to measure the spiritual needs of family caregivers of DM patients. This study was conducted at K.R.M.T Wongsonegoro Hospital, Semarang, in May 2024. The sampling technique used was consecutive sampling, with a total sample of 158 respondents. The sample criteria were family caregivers of DM patients at the Outpatient Installation of K.R.M.T Wongsonegoro Hospital, Semarang. Based on the results of the study, the spiritual needs of family caregivers in the medium category were 113 respondents (71,5%) with the religious dimension being the most needed dimension. The most needed religious dimension item is "to pray for yourself?" with research advice to family caregivers of DM patients is always to take the time to reflect on the contents of prayer and feel God's presence.
