Abstract
In the film adaptation of Sense-and-Sensibility, the main characters Elinor and Marianne have opposite traits that are crucial to the development of themes. The movie Sense and Sensibility depicts the story of the Dashwood family, which includes a mother and her three daughters named Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret. After their father's death, they move to a smaller cottage in Devonshire, facing several challenges due to losing their previous home in Norland. This study aims to determine the types of directive speech acts and reveal the characterization of the two main characters in the film Sense and Sensibility. Searle's theory was applied to analyze the types of directive-speech acts. The study is descriptive quantitative with a non participant method. The results of the study show that Marianne and Elinor use different types of directive speech acts with different frequencies. Elinor used suggestion, order, command, and request. On the other hand, Marianne only used order and command. Based on the types of directive speech acts they used, Elinor is known as a representation of ‘sense’ with the characteristics of being sensible, polite, and affectionate, while Marianne represents ‘sensibility’ with traits of being self-centered and emotional.
