Abstract

Patriarchy is still an entrenched social construction in Indonesia. This is indicated by the rise of early marriages which can lead to domestication experienced by women. Film as a mass media is used to reconstruct people's perspectives that still normalize the construction of patriarchal culture. Based on existing social realities, Yuni (2021) was produced to represent a female character who dares to make resistance efforts to escape from the patriarchal power.
The purpose of this research is to describe women’s resistance to domestication and to find out the dominant ideology in the film. The muted-group theory is used as the main theory, supported by the liberal feminism concept and James C. Scott's concept of resistance. John Fiske's semiotic analysis method is also used in this research to analyze the scenes based on three levels of coding, the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology.
The result of the research showed that there are efforts by female characters to resist domestication in Yuni (2021).The resistance was shown by the female characters through hidden transcripts and public transcripts. The hidden transcript is shown from the act of gossiping, grumbling, and leaving. The public transcript isshown throughdirect rejection and divorce. From this research, it is known that women still experience gender inequality caused by the patriarchal culture. Therefore, the role of men is needed in the domestic-reproductive sector.Findings that show the dominance of hidden transcript emphasize that women need social space to speak up and fight against various stereotypes that are identified in patriarchal society towards women.
