This research was conducted because compliance and violations of the cooperative principle were influenced by the politeness strategy used. In communication, every utterance can be in the form of a threat (FTA), therefore a strategy is needed to reduce the face threat. The purpose of this study is to find out the politeness strategies used to comply and violate the principle of cooperation.
The data were obtained from the speeches of the male characters in the drama Naito Dokutā episodes 1-3 which contain compliance and violations of the cooperative principle. The data collection method in this paper is the simak-catat method. Method of data analysis used is padan ekstralingual. Data were analyzed by using Grice's theory to analyze cooperative principles and Brown & Levinson's theory used to analyze the politeness strategies. Then, data is presented with an informal method.
Based on the results of the analysis positive politeness strategies is most used by male characters in complying the cooperative principle. Meanwhile, the bald off record strategies is most used in violation of the cooperative principle. This is because it is influenced by the workplace with the dominance of senior-junior social relations, age, and group membership. As a colleague, the speaker (male) still pays attention to the safety of the other person's face when speaking, even though in certain situations he had to violate the maxim of the principle of cooperation.
