Abstract

This research thesis analyzes Sara Crewe's class struggle in Frances
Hodgson Burnett's novel A Little Princess. The aim of this research thesis is to
discuss the depiction, factor, and impact of class struggle on Sara Crewe after her
sudden fall into poverty. This research thesis applies a Qualitative Library
research approach to analyze the class struggle experienced by Sara Crewe. The
primary source of this thesis is the novel A Little Princess, supported by relevant
secondary sources such as academic books, journals, and previous studies related
to the topic using the library research method. The intrinsic discussion explores
character and characterization, setting, and conflicts. The research topic
discussion explores the depiction, factor, and impact of the class struggle
experienced by Sara Crewe. The analysis shows that Sara experiences a big
change from the bourgeoisie to the proletariat through her life at Miss Minchin’s
seminary school. Sara’s struggle against the cruel environment of the seminary
school is caused by the unfair treatment and strict class divisions created by the
capitalist system. Furthermore, Sara’s experience shows the real impact of class
struggle, especially how it affects someone physically and emotionally. Therefore,
Sara’s character shows the struggle to maintain her self respect in spaces where
the freedom of thought and expression are taken away as she is being exploited
and alienated.
