Abstract

This study analyzes social inequality and class struggle during the 1930s Great
Depression in the film The Boys in the Boat (2023). It focuses on three main questions:
how the film shows working-class conditions, how conflicts reflect Karl Marx's class
conflict theory, and how characters overcome their struggles. Using Karl Marx’s
Conflict Theory and M.H. Abrams’ objective approach with visual analysis, the study
examines Joe Rantz, a poor student who joins the University of Washington rowing
team to pay for college. This study aims to highlight how lower-class living conditions,
like Hoovervilles, and conflicts with wealthy elites highlight deep social inequality.
Ultimately, the study concludes that unity, hard work, and collective effort help the
working-class rowers overcome unfairness and win the 1936 Berlin Olympics gold
medal.
