Abstract

Personality development is a natural process that every individual experiences as
they grow and interact with the world around them. This study discusses the
personality development of Briony Tallis, the main character in Ian McEwan's
novel Atonement (2001). In this story, Briony is depicted as a young girl whose
false accusation against Robbie Turner leads to a lifetime of guilt and the desire
for atonement. Her personality begins to change as she grows older and faces the
real consequences of her actions. Thus, this study examines how Briony is
characterized, what factors influence her personality development, and how her
development is reflected throughout the novel, adapting Elizabeth B. Hurlock's
personality development theory. This study uses a qualitative library research
method with a psychological approach, with the novel as the primary data source.
The analysis shows that Briony is characterized as an imaginative, judgmental,
and self-reflective character. Her personality development is influenced by eight
factors identified by Hurlock, namely physical changes, changes in environment,
changes in significant people, social pressures, changes in roles, strong
motivation, changes in self-concept, and psychotherapy. In terms of categories,
her development can be categorized as a change for the better, a quantitative
change, and a slow change. Overall, Briony transforms from an imaginative and
impulsive child into a more reflective, responsible, and emotionally mature adult
who spends her life attempting to atone for the damage she has caused.
