Abstract

This research investigates the use of American English expressions in daily
conversations among female students at Diponegoro University. The study aims to
identify the types of American English expressions used by the participants, examine
the reasons for their use, and analyze the role of American popular culture in shaping
participants’ familiarity with these expressions. This study employed a qualitative
descriptive method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and an American
English Expressions Checklist and were analyzed using Ronald Wardhaugh’s
sociolinguistic theory and John Storey’s concept of American popular culture.
The findings reveal that participants were familiar with various American
English expressions, particularly slang, colloquial expressions, abbreviations, internet
expressions, and idiomatic expressions. Although participants recognized many
expressions, only some were frequently used in daily conversations. Their familiarity
was primarily influenced by exposure to American popular culture through social
media and digital platforms, while their actual use depended on social interaction and
communication context. The study concludes that American popular culture
contributes to the spread and familiarity of American English expressions among
Indonesian university students.
