Abstract
Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) sees language as a social semiotic system in
which context and functional decisions shape meaning. Within SFL, the transitivity
system is a component of the ideational metafunction that represents experiential
meaning through processes, participants, and circumstances. Circumstances
provide additional contextual information related to time, place, manner, cause and
condition. This research aims to analyze the introverted personality of Charlie
Kelmeckis, the main character from Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a
Wallflower (1999), by examining the dominant transitivity process used in his
narration. Specifically, the study investigates the relationship between the dominant
transitivity processes and Charlie’s introverted personality traits. A descriptive
quantitative method was utilised, and the data were analyzed using Google Sheets.
The findings demonstrate a disproportion of all transitivity processes, which Mental
processes dominates at 61.74% out of 1,555 agentive clauses. This disproportion
provides strong linguistic evidence of Charlie’s introversion. This research further
demonstrates that Charlie’s identity as a wallflower is not merely a narrative
description, but a grammatically constructed through his own language’s ideational
choices and can only be properly understood through transitivity analysis.
