Abstract
The Motion of Puppet is a novel that tells the love journey of the couple Theo and Kay.
Love is one of the most important emotional aspects of human relationships, but it can
gradually change when emotional balance and personal identity are disrupted. The aim
of this study is to analyze the transformation of love between Theo and Kay in Keith
Donohue’s The Motion of Puppets, using Robert Sternberg’s triangular theory of love.
Adopting a psychological approach to literature, this study examines how intimacy,
passion and commitment are altered after Kay is transformed into a puppet and
progressively loses her memories and human identity. The analysis reveals that Kay’s
transformation weakens the emotional reciprocity within the relationship, whilst Theo
struggles tirelessly to preserve their love through dedication and sacrifice. More
specifically, the study highlights the progressive deterioration of intimacy, passion and
commitment throughout the different stages of the relationship between Theo and Kay.
In conclusion, the imbalance and eventual loss of the three components of love lead to
the collapse of consummate love in the novel.
