Abstract

The film Fair Play (2023) gains attention due to its depiction of the
breakdown of masculinity and emergence of fragile masculinity within a
competitive Wall Street environment. The purpose of this thesis is to identify how
American work culture shapes and triggers fragile masculinity in the main
character, Luke Edmunds, specifically after the promotion of his partner, Emily,
within a Wall Street hedge fund. The research method of this thesis uses library
research. In analyzing the intrinsic elements, the writer applies the Objectives
Approach, while for the extrinsic elements this thesis uses R.W. Connell’s theory
of masculinities and Craig Storti’s framework of American work culture. The
findings show that the collapse of hegemonic masculinity of Luke is a result of
specific values of American work culture, which include individualism, resultsoriented mentality, achievement-based identity, driven people, time matters,
straight talk, and no excuses.
