Abstract

This study examines the sexist utterances used by the Westover family in the
memoir Educated (2018) by applying Mills’ theory of sexist language analytical
framework. Qualitative method was used to analyse the utterances that contains
sexism spoken by the family members, namely the father, the mother, Tara, and
Shawn. The findings show that there are 40 sexist utterances that contain overt
and covert sexism. It was found that male characters mostly performed sexism
compared to female characters. The most frequent type is overt sexism,
specifically insult terms for women and naming. Meanwhile, female characters
tended to use covert sexism to express their view towards women behaviour.
Androcentric perspective is mostly found in their utterances, reflecting how
females using male views. The results demonstrated that by applying Mills’
theory, sexism values are presented and perpetuated through sexist utterances.
This analysis will contribute in the field of sociolinguistics by providing insights
into how sexism is performed within the family dynamics.
