Abstract

This thesis analyzes the directive illocutionary acts used by Anna Brady in the
movie Leap Year (2010). The objectives of this study are to identify the types of
directive illocutionary acts, to analyze the realizations of the directives in direct and
indirect forms, and to examine how social factors influence Anna Brady’s
directness. This study uses a descriptive qualitative methodology with a sociopragmatic approach. The population of the data is all utterances from the movie
Leap Year (2010), and the sample is Anna Brady’s utterances that include directive
illocutionary acts that are chosen with purposive sampling. The results of the
analysis are 58 directive illocutionary acts that include order, request, forbid,
advise, and command. These directives are realized into direct and indirect speech
acts, where 29 are direct, and the other 29 are indirect. The analysis shows that the
reason for using certain types of directives and the realization in direct or indirect
forms is influenced by the social factors. In conclusion, the use of directive speech
acts in Leap Year (2010) shows that the directives and the realization are influenced
by the social factors.
