Abstract
This thesis investigates the functions and gender patterns of swearing in the song lyrics
of the adult animated musical series Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. Using Pinker’s
(2007) five-function framework and a descriptive qualitative method, 133 instances of
swearing from 34 songs were analyzed. The results show that emphatic and abusive
swearing are most common, with male characters responsible for the majority of
swearing and utilizing all five functions, including for social bonding. Female
characters, meanwhile, use swearing less frequently and more strategically, mainly for
emphasis or self-assertion. These findings fill a research gap in the study of language
in animated musical series and highlight how swearing serves both narrative and
stylistic purposes, offering new perspectives in sociolinguistics.
