Abstract
This study analyzes the representation of the sublime in William Blake’s “The
Tyger” through Edmund Burke’s theory. It aims to identify the figurative language
in the poem and examine how it reflects Burke’s concept of the sublime. Using a
qualitative descriptive method with a close reading approach, this study finds that
Blake employs metaphor, analogy, personification, and symbolism to construct the
image of the Tyger. The analysis reveals key elements of the sublime: terror,
obscurity, power, privation, vastness, and infinity reflected in the tiger’s threatening
presence, the mystery of its creator, and its immense strength. The study concludes
that the figurative language in the poem effectively creates a Burkean sublime
experience, presenting the Tyger as a symbol of terrifying creature.
