Abstract
Language plays a crucial role in family interaction, specifically in negotiating power and identity, and can be reflected through impoliteness strategies. The aims of this study is to investigate the types and function of impoliteness strategies produced by three characters as a family, Enola Holmes, Mycroft Holmes, and Sherlock Holmes, to reveal how family interaction is negotiated among Enola Holmes, Mycroft Holmes, and Sherlock Holmes as a family and also using impoliteness strategies as a tool to reveal the characterization of Enola Holmes in Enola Holmes Season 1 (2020). This study used descriptive-qualitative research with transcribed utterances from the film Enola Holmes Season 1 (2020) as a primary data. The data were collected by watching the film repeatedly with additional support from secondary sources. The result shows the types of impoliteness strategies that the most appears is bald on-record impoliteness with 8 data, followed by positive impoliteness with 6 data, negative impoliteness with 3 data, sarcasm or mock impoliteness with 2 data, and withhold politeness with 1 data. Along with the types, the function of impoliteness strategies that the most appears is affective impoliteness and the least appears is entertaining impoliteness. Meanwhile, the characterization of Enola Holmes that reveal using the data utterances impoliteness strategies are independent, rebellious, and emotional.
