Abstract

Laufey’s album A Matter of Time is an ideal literary work to study using a
cognitive-linguistic approach focused on conceptual metaphors. The major theme
of this album is the painful realities and imperfections of modern relationships. This
study aims to examine how the conceptual metaphors in the song lyrics reflect
Laufey’s perspective as a singer-songwriter in interpreting a relationship. This
study uses Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) to
analyze the meaning and types of metaphors, and Pragglejaz Group’s (2007)
Metaphorical Identification Procedure (MIP) to identify and determine the correct
metaphors in the lyric. Descriptive-qualitative methods are applied in this study to
present the findings in more detail in the form of narrative paragraphs. The
metaphorical data are obtained purposively by sampling lyrical lines that implicitly
represent the relationship. The analysis reveals that Laufey uses metaphors to
represent her negative perspectives on modern relationships, evidenced by marking
them as pretentious, competitive, and transactional interactions.
