Abstract
This thesis focuses on the character development of Sibling Dex, the protagonist in “A Psalm of the Wild-built,” who went on a journey to the wild to find contentment within themselves despite having a comfortable life. Their interaction with Mosscap, a robot, sparks new perspectives on how to see the world, eventually making them grow to accept themselves. This present study uses a qualitative descriptive method and employs speech and thought presentation (STPT) to track Sibling Dex’s character development through the language used in the story. Furthermore, this study integrates observational learning theory to underscore the impact of modeling behavior on the development of Sibling Dex’s character throughout their journey. The result suggests a remarkable shift in character development from the use of STPT modes, especially from the preceding use of Free Indirect Thought, Direct Thought, and Indirect Thought, to a striking number of Direct Speech at the end of the story. Additionally, observational learning through Sibling Dex’s interactions with Mosscap, as a modeled behavior, influenced the character's development. Finally, it serves as evidence of Sibling Dex’s resolve to find their purpose through self-acceptance and ultimately highlights their shift toward a better character by the end of the story.
