Abstract

This study examines the liberal feminist principles reflected in the main character of Diana Wynne Jones’s Howl’s Moving Castle. The study is based on the idea that women often experience inequality due to social expectations and gender roles that restrict their autonomy and opportunities. The objective of this research is to identify the factors that shape the development of liberal feminist principles and to analyze the principles of liberal feminism experienced by Sophie Hatter as the main character. This research applies library research method and feminist literary criticism, especially the liberal feminism proposed by Rosemarie Tong. The data are taken from the novel and analyzed through its intrinsic elements, including character, setting, and conflict. The results show that Sophie’s experiences with what people expect from her because of her gender and the way people are treated in society help her to become a stronger and more confident person.
