Abstract
This study analyzes Maslow’s framework, the hierarchy of needs, in the character Stella from Twisted Lies (2022). The objectives of this study are threefold. First, to analyze Stella’s character and characterizations, settings, and conflicts. Second, to analyze Stella's fulfillment of her needs. Third, to analyze the relation between Stella’s characterizations, settings, and conflicts and her fulfillment of the hierarchy of needs. The results show that Stella is a complex character, revealed by her character and characterizations, as well as her circumstances and obstacles which define and construct her depth. Throughout the narrative, Stella is able to gradually fulfill her needs although she is slightly hindered by her own circumstances. Furthermore, there is a relation between her intrinsic elements, namely the characterizations, conflicts, and setting, and the fulfillment of her needs. Her strength supports her fulfillment, such as her resilience, her hardworking nature, and her occupation, giving her further access to meeting her needs. However, some of her circumstances, her negative attributes, such as her tendency to be hard on herself, her conflicts, and her settings, complicate her journey in completing the hierarchies.
