Abstract

Media actually provide information that is credible, clear, factual, and trustworthy. In contrast, communicating information through the news media that tend to offer the messages are charged tendentious, causing a conflict, and side in the interest and particular goals. News from the media, especially news about conversions, is sensitive news in Indonesia. This study aims to identify the dominant discourse, production process, and sociocultural practice behind the news text's dominant discourse on celebrity conversions in online media. The researcher uses a qualitative approach, a critical paradigm, and Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis method. The results of the study show that there is a dominant discourse on converting celebrities to Islam in online media with a positive content preference; converting to Islam as a personal awareness, getting support, there is a change in terms of morals for the better, and becoming more religious by always trying to increase understanding and actualize religious values, such as learning to explore the Qur'an and studying religion with religious leaders. On the other hand, news of celebrities being non-Islamic in online media has a negative content preference; Converting to a non-Islamic religion became the focus of netizen conversation, received various negative comments, even received threatening comments, and became excited and interpreted as a controversy. This condition shows the inequality of celebrity conversion news in the online media. Second, there are internal media relations and media policies that allow it to shape inequality in celebrity conversion news in online media. Third, the media exploits the audience’s emotions and interests through the news on celebrities’ unequal conversion. Under certain conditions, the news inequality might be advantageous in terms of an increase media revenues.
