Abstract

Fariaji, Inggar Pranadya. 2026. “A Comparison of the Structure and Meaning of
the Verb Ochiru in Japanese and the Verb Tiba in Javanese.” Undergraduate Thesis,
Japanese Language and Culture Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Diponegoro

This study examines a comparison of intransitive sentence structures and the
meanings of the verb “ochiru” in Japanese and the verb “tiba” [t i b ᴐ] in Javanese.
Lexically, both verbs share the same basic meaning of ‘fall’; however, they are used in
different structural and semantic contexts in each language. The research data consist of
sentences containing the verbs “ochiru” and “tiba”, collected from written sources in
Japanese and Javanese. Japanese data were obtained from dictionaries, news articles, and
other written sources, while Javanese data were taken from Javanese-language magazines.
Data were collected using the observation method with note-taking techniques. Data
analysis employed the intralingual matching method with a contrastive analysis approach
to identify similarities and differences in the structure and meanings of those verbs. The
results of the analysis are presented descriptively using the informal method.
The findings indicate that intransitive sentences in Japanese and Javanese share
similarities in their basic structure, particularly in the use of verbs as predicates.
Nevertheless, differences are found in the structure of verb phrases functioning as
predicates in Japanese and Javanese intransitive sentences, especially in their constituent
elements. In terms of meaning, the analysis reveals a similarity and thirteen differences.
The verbs “ochiru” and “tiba” share one basic meaning, namely movement from a higher
position to a lower one. In addition, several differences in extended meanings are identified,
reflecting differences in semantic usage in each language.
