Abstract
This study aims to analyse the manifestation of the nine principles of Wabi Sabi aesthetics in traditional
Gassho Zukuri houses in Gokayama. Employing a qualitative approach, the research uses literature review
and descriptive analysis of data obtained from academic journal articles, official websites, and books. The
findings indicate that Gassho Zukuri architecture embodies the nine Wabi Sabi principles organic
materials, texture, freedom of form, simplicity, color, imperfection and beauty, space, balance, and sobriety
through the use of natural materials, traditional construction techniques, and architectural forms shaped
by local geographical and cultural conditions. This study contributes to the understanding of Gassho
Zukuri architecture not only as a cultural heritage and a functional response to environmental contexts,
but also as a representation of traditional Japanese aesthetic values, particulary the concept of Wabi Sabi.
Keywords: Wabi Sabi, Japanese aesthetics, traditional architecture, Gassho Zukuri, Gokayama.
