Abstract
This study traces the development of matcha in Japanese culture since its
introduction by the monk Eisai to its transformation in the modern era. Initially
used in Zen practices to aid meditation, matcha later became a key element of
chanoyu, reflecting the values of simplicity and harmony. In the modern era,
modernization and globalization have shifted matcha from a spiritual symbol to a
popular product in various cuisines and lifestyles. Using a qualitative approach
and analyzing Inglehart's theory and Barthes' semiotics, this study shows that
matcha continues to build new meanings and remains relevant in Japanese social
dynamics.
