Abstract

Allifah, Rona Khofi, 2025. " Cosplayer's Motivation in Japanese Culture Events in
Semarang: A Case Study of the Semarang Cosplayer Community (COSMA),"
Thesis, Japanese Language and Culture Undergraduate Program, Faculty of
Cultural Sciences, Diponegoro University, Semarang. Advisor: Dewi Saraswati
Sakariah, S.S., M.Si.
This study stems from the growing phenomenon of Cosplay as part of
Japanese popular culture, which is becoming increasingly well-known and popular
among young people in Indonesia, especially in the city of Semarang. Cosplay is
not only understood as a hobby, but also as a space for expressing identity and
creativity, as well as a means of social interaction within communities of Japanese
popular culture enthusiasts. However, Cosplay still faces a variety of perceptions
from the public, making it interesting to study from the perspective of the
motivations and meanings held by its practitioners.
This study aims to identify the factors that drive individuals' interest in
Cosplay activities and analyze the role of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in
shaping the enthusiasm of Cosplayers in Semarang City. The research method used
is descriptive qualitative with data collection through in-depth interviews with
Cosplayers who are active in the Cosplay community, supported by literature
studies.
The results of the study show that interest in Cosplay is influenced by an
interest in Japanese popular culture, a desire for self-expression, and a drive to
build social relationships within the community. Intrinsic motivations such as
personal satisfaction, enjoyment in creativity, and self-fulfillment, as well as
extrinsic motivations such as environmental support, social recognition, and the
existence of Cosplay events, play an important role in maintaining Cosplayer
engagement. This research shows that Cosplay can be understood as a subculture
that provides an alternative space for the younger generation to develop their
identity and creativity outside the dominant cultural norms, while also
demonstrating the dynamics of Japanese popular culture adaptation in the
Indonesian socio-cultural context.
