Abstract
ABSTRACT
This research examines the representation of Yokai in the tokusatsu series Ninja Sentai
Kakuranger (1994) with the aim of revealing how traditional Japanese myths are
reconstructed within modern popular media. Using a qualitative content analysis method
and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation, this study analyzes the visual aspects,
characterization, narrative roles, and cultural functions of Yokai in the series. The
findings show that Kakuranger presents Yokai not only as elements of entertainment but
also as a means of preserving Japanese cultural values through the revival of classical
folklore. Thus, Kakuranger can be understood as a form of popular media that functions
to maintain the continuity of traditional culture while simultaneously representing the
adaptation of those values in a modern context.
