Abstract

The emergence of body modification trends among women today, which shows that there
is a new standard of beauty that has been successfully created and many women voluntarily follow
these beauty standards. The emergence of the trend of body modification or body modification
among women today shows that there are new beauty standards created and many women
voluntarily follow these beauty standards. Based on these mentioned situations above, this study
aims to find out how women receive, process, search for and interpret the messages that they
receive, both from social and the mainstream media, as well as from their environment.
Considering that in Indonesia itself there are written and unwritten norms for women and it is
considered taboo if they violate them. This study also wants to see how women perceive
themselves as well as the appearance that they choose to present in public.
This study uses an interpretive paradigm, cybernetic and sociopsychological traditions,
as well as qualitative research methods within a phenomenological approach. The techniques of
data collection for this study are through in-depth interviews with women, who are eligible for this
research because they have had plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery. The informants are 6 women
and there is no age limit. The data was collected, summarised, the data patterns matched, and the
data presented, with conclusions being made.
A long time ago, the act of changing oneself physically was a taboo act, which is still
considered controversial. As time goes by, the modern society is now beginning to accept
technology as part of developments within the beauty industry. Many women are beginning to be
interested in changing their body shape as they lack confidence about their physical appearance.
These feelings of insecurity encourages women to start paying attention to the information about
body modification, that is spread via both social media and television shows. The informants began
to open themselves up to understand the information within advertisements, as well as read
testimonials from netizens in the comments section below the beauty advertisements.
Based on the brief information within advertisements, the informants began to search for
information from Google, ask patients whom the informants know, as well as confirm with the
doctors in the beauty industry. There are three key findings in this study. Firstly, there is a
description of the importance of verbal information or word of mouth (WOM), from both
colleagues and family and also those giving testimony about their physical appearance before and
after (before-after) body modification procedures. All informants show sufficiently high
motivation in their decision making to undertake body modification because they see the
transformation of their colleagues and family. Secondly, the expertise of doctors, when
approaching and educating prospective patients, greatly determines a woman’s decision in
choosing the doctor who will treat them. The final finding shows that informants, who have been
familiar with body modification for a long time, tend to be more critical in processing messages
compared to informants who have just entered the world of body modification.
