Abstract
This study is to show how Will Newman and Stella Grant, the characters in 2019 film Five Feet Apart, to reveal their social interaction in their relationship of physical limitations brought by cystic fibrosis, this study used adjacency pairs and turn-taking processes in their conversations and uses the turn constructional unit (TCU) and Jefferson transcription system to identify different adjacency pair types (e.g., question-answer, offer-refusal) and turn-taking patterns (e.g., overlaps, latching, self-selection). Data were collected from selected conversations between the two characters and analyzed to sees how these conversational structures reflect interpersonal development like emotional closeness. The results show that preferred adjacency pairs and smooth turn transition makes the relationship more intimate, although dispreferred respons, interruptions and silence make emotional distance. The approach contributes to pragmatic studies in conversation by demonstrating how language patterns can change the social ties.
