Abstract
The Purple Hearts (2022) movie tells the story of Luke Morrow, an American Marine, and Cassie Salazar, a songwriter, who agree to marry for marriage allowance and health insurance. This study aims to analyze the types and the functions of commissive speech acts used by the two main characters in Purple Hearts (2022) movie. The data were collected from their utterances with other characters. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method and purposive sampling to select the relevant data in the Purple Hearts (2022) movie. This study used Searle and Vanderveken’s (1985) theory of commissive speech acts. The analysis of commissive speech acts revealed 29 data from Luke and Cassie. Luke’s show through his 18 of commissive speech acts, which include promise, guarantee, refuse, threat, and vow. Meanwhile, Cassie’s 11 data of commissive speech acts, which include promise, refuse, offer, and vow. Each type serves a different function depending on the context of the conversation in the dialogue.
