Abstract

This research is concerned with the attachment styles reflected in Taylor Swift’ssongs “Back to December” and “Last Kiss”. The writer chose these songs due to their compelling, similar themes that piqued the writer’s interest. This study seeks to analyze how thelyrics and their elements can reveal the attachment style of the speaker in the song.In order to identify the attachment style, the writer adopts Owen Barfield's theory in analyzing the intrinsic aspects, which include metaphor and diction, as well as John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth’s attachment theory for the extrinsic aspects. The writer's analysis consists of three stages: One, identifying the diction and metaphor that relate to identifying the speaker’s attachment style. Two, description of various attachment styles and their indicators. Three, describing the emotional responses to separation in each song. The analysis concludes that “Back to December” reflects avoidant attachment through suppression of emotion and delayed regret, while “Last Kiss” reflects anxious attachment through emotional dependence and clinging to memory.
Keywords: attachment theory, avoidant attachment, anxious attachment, metaphor, diction
