Abstract

This study examines figurative language and types of longing contained in selected pop song lyrics from the 2010 era. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach supported by a semantic approach, focusing on the meaning of songs conveyed through figurative expressions. Data were collected from ten pop songs selected based on the theme of longing and analyzed by identifying the meanings contained in the lyrics. The data collection method used documentation, and the data analysis method used content analysis. The findings of this study identified six types of figurative language, namely hyperbole, symbolism, imagery, irony, metaphor, and personification, and revealed five types of longing, namely utopian longing, life incompleteness and imperfection, reflection longing, symbolic richness, and reflection longing. From these findings, symbolism and imagery are the most dominant types of figurative language. Figurative language plays an important role in shaping the complexity of longing contained in song lyrics.
