Abstract
The Orville (2017) is a science fiction television series written by Seth MacFarlane set in the 25th century where it follows the interplanetary adventures of the exploratory Planetary Union ship named the USS Orville, In the USS Orville, there are two crew members that work as substitute captains when the captain or the first officer is not available namely Alara Khitan and Bortus with differing experience in leadership. The purpose of this study is to examine the way politeness is used in differing levels of leadership. Utilizing Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory of politeness strategies and Liden et al.’s (2008) 7 factor model of servant leadership, this study investigates how MacFarlane applies politeness strategies to depict the difference in leadership experience of Alara Khitan and Bortus. Utterances were obtained from relevant lines in the series through the method of notetaking. This study finds that Alara and Bortus uses all 4 of politeness strategies namely Bald on Record, Off Record, Positive Politeness, and Negative Politeness. Alara proportionally utilizes more Bald on Record (52,8% to 50%) and Negative Politeness (9,4% to 3,8%) whereas Bortus uses more Off Record (3,8% to 3,7%) and Positive Politeness (42,3% to 33,9%). In regards to factors of politeness strategy, Alara and Bortus uses power relation as the most influencing factor. In relation to servant leadership theory this paper finds Bortus to be superior compared to Alara as he proportionally used more positive politeness.
