Abstract
This research thesis discusses intragroup discrimination within African-American
teenagers in the movie Dope (2015). The purposes of this research thesis is to
analyze the cause, influence, and interaction within African-American teenagers and
the community that leads to intragroup discrimination in the movie Dope (2015).
The writer uses a sociological approach by analyzing intragroup discrimination
using social identification theory by Michael A. Hogg and Dominic Abrams, and a
library research method for data collection. The primary data of this research thesis
is taken from the movie Dope (2015), meanwhile, the secondary data of this research
thesis is taken from books, journals, and online sources. The findings of this research
thesis include intrinsic elements discussion, such as Malcolm’s character
development and his central conflict, as well as supporting characters like Dom,
Nakia, and Austin, along with the movie’s setting. In terms of extrinsic elements
discussion, this research thesis identifies categorization and social comparison as
key causes of intragroup discrimination. Additionally, it examines the consequences
of such discrimination, including Malcolm’s eventual involvement in drug dealing,
and the broader social interactions within the AfricanAmerican community that
shape collective culture and group identity.
