Abstract
The study aims to identify the types of processes used in the clauses of both songs and to
examine how these linguistic choices construct and convey feminist perspectives. This
research investigates the representations of feminism in Little Mix’s song lyrics Joan of
Arc and Salute through Halliday’s transitivity system within the framework of Systemic
Functional Linguistics (SFL). A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data
consisting of clauses extracted from the two selected songs. The findings reveal that both
lyrics utilize various process types, including material, mental, relational, behavioral, and
verbal processes. Joan of Arc predominantly features material and mental processes, while
Salute mainly employs material processes. The analysis demonstrates that the two songs
articulate central feminist values such as equality, freedom, and independence. Salute
emphasizes solidarity and collective empowerment as a form of gender equality, whereas
Joan of Arc highlights individual autonomy and confidence as expressions of women’s
freedom and independence. Overall, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of
how popular music employs transitivity choices to shape feminist meanings and negotiate
women’s roles in contemporary culture.
