Abstract
The objective of this research is to find out the techniques of translation employed
by students in translating English science articles, to determine the accuracy level
of students’ translations, and to identify and analyze the challenges and difficulties
encountered by students when translating a science article. This research uses
mixed method research design and a test was conducted to collect data of students’
translation. Students' translation methods were analyzed using an adaptation of
Molina & Albir's translation categorization. Meanwhile, their accuracy was
assessed using Nababan's translation accuracy assessment instrument. As for the
accuracy, majority of students’ translations works are accurate with 95% of
percentage and less accurate translation is 5%, no students translated inaccurately.
The students use transposition, amplification, established equivalent, modulation,
reduction, linguistic amplification, and literal translation. The most dominant one
used by students are transposition and amplification namely 28% for each. The
second most dominant is established equivalent with 12% of the percentage.
Following with modulation, reduction, and linguistic amplification with 9% of
percentage. Meanwhile, the application of literal translation method is only 5%. In
conclusion, the most frequently used translation method by students when
translating English articles was transposition and amplification. Moreover, the
results of the English-to-Indonesian translations are mostly accurate.
