Abstract
This thesis deals with the condition of grief, which is portrayed by Matt as the main male character in Erin Slaughter’s short story entitled “The Box” (2023). The purpose of this analysis is to identify what causes of Matt’s grief, the stages of grief experienced by Matt, and the effects of Matt’s grief. This research focuses on intrinsic elements: character, characterization, and conflict. For the extrinsic elements, it focuses on the causes of grief, the five stages of grief, and the effects of grief that using Kubler-Ross’s sudden death, Kubler-Ross’s five stages of grief,
and Kubler-Ross’s the effects of grief. The writer uses three methods: the library research method, psychological approach, and qualitative analysis. The result of the research shows that Matt is undergoing the five stages of grief caused by the
death of his mother, his baby, and his father. Matt experiences all five stages, and it impacts his life.
