Abstract
End of Watch (2012) is a film that follows the story of two Los Angeles police officers who work in a dangerous and multicultural neighborhood in South Central LA. In this
setting, the characters often use harsh language and strong negative expressions as part of how they talk to each other which shaped by social background context. This thesis
explores the use of dysphemism in the End of Watch (2012) film, focusing on the spoken dialogue of main and supporting characters. The study uses qualitative research and aims to find out what are the types and functions of dysphemistic expressions found throughout the film. The data collection is in form of non-participant observation and this study applies simak dan catat (listen and note) technique to record the data.
Furthermore, additional method to support the process of analyzing such as qualitative content analysis is also employed. The result shows that there are 155 dysphemistic
expressions and the most dominant type used is dysphemistic euphemism while mostly employed by the speaker to demean others and to demonstrate a strong bond in friendship. The study concludes that dysphemism in End of Watch serves not only as verbal offense, but also as a tool for emotional expression, identity, and solidarity among characters. The use of harsh and informal language reflects the real-life
pressures of law enforcement and offers insight into how language operates in extreme social environments.
