Abstract
Agatha is one of the most important characters in building the story in The School for Good and Evil (2022) movie, and she shows the echoism traits due to her long-standing
friendship with Sophie, who is narcissistic. This study will examine the echoism traits in Agatha's character in The School for Good and Evil (2022) movie by observing her speech acts, which show how echoism traits appear in the way she speaks to other characters. The analysis in this study will use Searle's (1979) speech act theory and Savery's (2018) echoism theory with a qualitative descriptive method. The context of the utterance is also used to explain the analysis in more detail. In this study, the writer gathered the data through non-participant observation. There are 77 data showing four types of illocutionary acts in Agatha, including directives, assertives, commissives, and expressives. From the total 77 data, 55 data are shown as defensive echoism type. This can be seen in Agatha, who tends to over-adapt to the needs of others, such as defending others, following other people's opinions, putting herself down, and prioritizing other people's feelings and needs over her own. Agatha uses this pattern to maintain good
relationships, avoid conflict and rejection, and not be seen as a narcissist.
