Abstract

This undergraduate thesis explores sexual exploitation within the context of prostitution as experienced by Kiara Johnson, the main character of Leila Mottley's Nightcrawling. The objective of this study is to analyze the forms, the coping strategies, and the impacts of sexual exploitation as portrayed in Leila Mottley’s Nightcrawling. The theoretical framework is based on Kathleen Barry’s radical feminist theory, as presented in The Prostitution of Sexuality. This research thesis adapts a feminist and a psychological approach while employing a library
research method, including primary and secondary sources. The result of this study shows that the forms of sexual exploitation experienced by Kiara Jonson include sexual harassment, prostitution, rape, and trafficking. The coping strategies for sexual exploitation employed by Kiara Johnson involve distancing, dissociation, disengagement, disembodiment and dissembling. The impacts of sexual exploitation experienced by Kiara Johnson are dehumanization, loss of self-perception, and psychological trauma. It can be concluded that Kiara Johnson,
in Leila Mottley’s Nightcrawling, experiences sexual exploitation as she engages in prostitution, goes with strategies that dehumanize her, and leads to psychological damages.
Key words: sexual exploitation, prostitution, radical feminism, Nightcrawling
